Rationale for determining the project area:

Patharghata Upazila, located in the southernmost part of Bangladesh, is surrounded by the ocean to the south and the Sundarbans to the west. There are many small and large rivers and numerous canals throughout the land. The livelihood of the people of Patharghata, who are depending on nature, is neglected, deprived and poverty-stricken compared to other areas of Bangladesh. People lose their lives due to cyclones, tidal waves, boat or trawler sinkings, etc. This upazila is prone to cyclones, is constantly injured and disabled in cyclones. In order to overcome this situation and to create a disability-conscious population, Sangram has taken the initiative to implement the MaPinCBR project in collaboration with Centre for Disability in Development (CDD).

Program Implementation Methodology:  The project will be implemented through the Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) approach.

  1. Early identification and early intervention of children and youth at risk of disability.
  2. Inclusive community engagement and accountability.
  3. Strengthening service referral networks for children and youth with disabilities.
  4. Empowering youth and caregivers with disabilities through mobilization, leadership development, and community internship opportunities.
  5. Leveraging local government and other institutions and resources to address local problems.
